Known problems

The UDMA hard disk interface has the read and write signals reversed. This can be fixed by swapping the signals in the cable.

This is most easy done using a 40 pin cable. At the host end of the cable, unclip the plastic retaining clip from the IDC connector, and cut the cable between pins 22 and 23 and 25 and 26. This should allow you to lift just these three pins off the IDC contacts, twist it, so that pins 23 and 25 are swapped, and push it back over the contacts. Check that the pins are making good contact, and replace the retaining clip. If you don't get a good contact, it may be necessary to trim the end of the cable, and replace the IDC connector.
