Setting up NIS

This service, which was previously known as Yellow Pages (YP), allows many of the information files traditionally used in Unix systems to be replaced by accesses to remote databases.

There are many configuration options for NIS, which are described in the Linux NIS HOWTO. Two of these are essential:

  • there must be a line identifying the NIS domain name in the file /etc/defaultdomain; for example:

inmos.co.uk

  • there must be a line to identify the NIS server for this domain must be added to the file /etc/yp.conf; for example:

domain inmos.co.uk broadcast
